Meet the people behind BIGA

Dr John Tomlinson

The driving force behind the development of the Australian BIGA website, and its content approver, is recently retired QUT Senior Lecturer,
Dr JOHN TOMLINSON BSocStud, BA(Hons), MSocWk Qld, PhD Murdoch.

John Tomlinson has long campaigned for a Basic Income. He completed his Doctoral Thesis, entitled: Income Maintenance in Australia: The Income Guarantee Alternative in 1989, which was awarded by Murdoch University, Western Australia. John's thesis is available on this BIGA site under 'theses'.

John Tomlinson’s research interests include income maintenance, Basic Income, unemployment, Indigenous struggle, social policy, refugees and critical theory building.

John Tomlinson is widely published, particularly on Basic Income. Recent publications include: Income Insecurity: The Basic Income Alternative, e-book (2001). BIGA is proud to advise that this E-book has been archived in perpetuity by the National Library of Australia and may be accessed there at http://nla.gov.au/nla.arc-42199  as well as under E-Books on this site. Other publications on this BIGA site are: ‘The Basic Solution to Unemployment’, Australian Journal of Social Issues (2001); ‘Income Support for Unemployed People: Human Rights versus Utilitarian Rights’, Journal of Economic and Social Policy (2002). A jointly authored and refereed paper was presented at the 9th National Conference on Unemployment in December of 2002 and published in the refereed proceedings: Schooneveldt S. and Tomlinson J. Does Receiving a Breach Penalty from Centrelink Coerce Unemployed People to Comply with the Government’s Wishes? (Schooneveldt & Tomlinson, 2002, pp. 167-178).

Jenni Mays

Assisting in the development of the Australian BIGA website as a content editor and publisher is QUT Lecturer,
JENNI MAYS BSoc Sci (Human Services), MA (Research) QUT .

Jenni is in the final stagers of completing a doctoral thesis as part of her PhD candidature in the Social Work and Human Services Program, Faculty of Health, QUT. The working title of her research thesis is “A comparison of the Australian income support system with Basic Income from 1908 to 2007 in relation to people with a disability.”

Jenni’s wider research interests include social policy, disability theory, income maintenance, Basic Income, critical theory research paradigms and issues of violence against women with disabilities (disability and feminist studies).

Under ‘Browse By Author’ on this BIGA site, Jenni’s refereed paper entitled ‘Employment and disability: Some emerging questions (PDF, 111KB)’ was presented at the Creating a Culture of Full Employment Incorporating the 7th Path to Full Employment Conference and 12th National Conference on Unemployment (Newcastle, December, 2005). Jenni's journal publication ‘Feminist disability theory: domestic violence against women with a disability’ Disability and Society (2006) examines the issue of domestic violence against women with a disability in relation to disablism, poverty and income support.
